September 2007 Archives

Our iPhones arrived a few weeks after the BIG launch, which we covered here on AppleSavant with three lovely videos filmed around Orange County, CA (shameless plug...wait, you're already here!).

So we were just sitting around preparing for our Monday morning (oops, already here) and realized we hadn't posted that post we've been tossing around in our heads.  Let us enlighten you to our Thoughts on iPhone, 3-Months In.
Ok, we admit it: we're too busy.  We've tried everything to get more time in our day, but nothing's working.  Perhaps we should sign up with Merlin Mann for assistance?

Or we could just bring you into our little group.

If you think you can write or if you know Apple stuff, we could use you.  It's not a high-paying gig at this point (read: volunteer), yet we believe in big things and with your help it could be big.

Incidentally, if you pontificate about things not all-Apple, we may be interested in plugging you into our little party of Savants.  Blogging, Podcasting and Video Podcasting are what our bosses do and they said we could get some new friends--so let us know if you'd like to be part of our team.

How, you ask, would you make it known that you have interest?  Simply comment to this entry and we'll get back with you.  Be sure to include a valid email address and if you have any stuff out there already, please tell us where to find it--we're not treasure hunters, mind you.

PS: if you know about designing templates/styles in MT and how to extensify it, drop us a line as well.

Quicksilver in Real Life from Matt McInerney on Vimeo.

Great stuff.  If you aren't familiar with Quicksilver, we Savants highly recommend it.  It's free and available from blacktree.comMerlin Mann of 43Folders, personal productivity specialist, is a huge proponent of Quicksilver.

We here all love it and are baffled when we can't hit command-space and get our little command window!  HMPH!

So here's something we at Apple Savant disovered that most people are unaware of: pairing your Apple Remote.  Do you work or live in an environment where there is more than one Mac with IR-capability?  If so, you can pair each remote to work only with one computer, thereby eliminating duplicate sessions of the AppleTV-esque functionality.

You can search "pairing apple remote" in the Help system of your computer or follow the directions, below, which we copied from Help for your convenience:

Pairing an Apple Remote with your computer

If you have more than one IR-equipped computer at the same location, you'll probably want to "pair" each computer with a specific Apple Remote. Pairing sets the computer to take commands only from the specified remote. You can pair your computer with only one remote at a time.

  1. Hold the remote close to the computer (3 to 4 inches away) and point the remote at the front of the computer.
  2. Press and hold both the Menu and Next buttons on the remote until the paired-remote graphic appears on your screen (about 5 seconds).

To remove the pairing, open System Preferences, click Security, and click the Unpair button. Your computer will now take commands from any remote.

To prevent your computer from being controlled by any remote, select "Disable remote control infrared receiver" in the Security preferences pane.

According to The Apple Phone Show, O2 will become the official carrier of the iPhone in the UK.  The Brits will enjoy a similar activation process as we get over here in the USA, yet they'll require only an 18-month contract, rather than AT&T's 24-month contract.  But seriously, why would you want to break your iPhone contract!?

The unit will cost £269 (including VAT--European Value Added Tax), which is $538 USD.  Now our $399 price looks even more like a bargain!  The people of Great Britain will also enjoy unlimited WiFi use with O2's 7,500+ point public WiFi network--an industry first in the UK.  Plans range from £35 to £55 ($69 to $109 USD) and include between 200 and 1,200 minutes, unlimited data, 200 to 500 SMS messages, visual voicemail and the aforementioned WiFi hotspot usage.

This is great news for Europeans.  The rumor sites are abuzz with Germany being the next land to get the iPhone.  Learn more from Apple's Press Release.

What's next in the world of savants? Podcasts. Let us know what you want in a new Apple-centric podcast. We'll begin with basic roundtable discussions, but will ultimately look to feedback from you on what the podcast should be like.
Hello loyal readership:

We know one entry per month is not cutting it, so we're stepping up our game.  Much of this was due to technical issues and platform choices.  Even though we're still working through that, we have no excuse to stop posting.

So keep an eye out here at the AppleSavant.  We're adding more editorial content on all things Apple.

Thanks for stopping by,
